Just Humor Us: Comic Strip Contest Guidelines

Submissions accepted from September 1st through September 25 (National Comic Book Day). Winners announced October 6, 2025!

1. Submissions must be the registrants’ original art and writing, must not infringe on anyone else's work, and must not have been previously published and titled.

2. Individual submissions only. No teams. Getting editing feedback from others before submission is allowed, but any updates/corrections must be made by the registrant.

3.  Respectful content: Entries must adhere to respectful standards and avoid content that is the following:

  • Sexually explicit
  • Violent or threatening
  • Discriminatory based on race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation
  • Profane or vulgar

4. For consistency and for winners’ comics to be featured in Journal-News, comic art must be done in the following ways:

  • By hand or digitally, created by the cartoonist applicant. (No AI art or writing for this contest!)
  • Either black & white or color.
  • If by hand, in ink and legibly (pencil-only art or text will not be accepted).
  • If in color, only with marker or digitally, so that it is higher quality and, if needed, can easily be scanned and received by us.
  • With the cartoonist’s signature or initials included somewhere within the comic panels.
  • With the title in the first panel.
  • Without any writing on the back, so that it can be easily scanned.
  • In .jpg or .png format and either 10” length x 2.5” height or 10” length x 5” height (4:1 or 2:1 ratio)

Winners will be printed as long as the quality is print-ready as determined by the Journal-News.

5. When you submit your comic online via email to us, the sign-up sheet included must be fully completed and signed (anyone under 18 must include adult guardian’s information and signature of permission, too).

6. Email your submission (and any questions) to justhumorus@lanepl.org to submit your comic along with the filled-out forms. (If submitted in person, do not staple.)
