Rowan of Rin
By Emily Rodda
Ages 9-12

Summary:
The people of Rin are strong and brave-except for Rowan. Rowan has always been shy and timid, and most people in the village of Rin make fun of him. One morning, the mountain stream that the village depends upon dries up, and everyone is sure that the dragon that lives on top of the mountain is to blame. The villagers turn to Sheba the Wise Woman for help. She tells them that a group of seven must climb to the top of the mountain, and that Rowan must be one of them. She gives Rowan a magic map that can be read only if he is holding it. Can Rowan find out what happened to the stream and help his village survive?

Discussion Questions:

  1. What are the bukshah? Why does Rowan prefer to spend his time with them?
  2. Why does Strong Jonn call Rowan "little rabbit?"
  3. Why does the Wise Woman Sheba think that Rowan should go to the top of the mountain?
  4. When Rowan's mother sees the wound caused by the map of the mountain, what does she do? Is this the way you expect a mother to act towards her son? Why or why not?
  5. Why do you think the people of Rin act the way they do towards Rowan?
  6. On the journey, we learn of the fears that "break" each villager's heart. What is Rowan's fear, and how is his different from those of the other villagers?
  7. What do Rowan and Allun have in common?
  8. Did you believe that there was really a dragon at the top of the mountain?
  9. What made Rowan the "bravest heart?"
  10. Do you think Rowan was changed by his journey? If so, how?
