Lane Public Library
Commemorating the Years 1866-1997

“This occasion calls to mind the fact that the library is the first important gift to the city of Hamilton. Every dollar is from the hard earned money of the donor. Let the people remember, that, not for display or personal glory was the noble gift bestowed, but for the young men and women, to educate themselves. Here they may read what others have taught and wrote and thus learn that which they would not otherwise know. Franklin gave to the youth of Philadelphia a free library and his name will live as long as Franklin free library shall last, so shall the name of Lane go down to posterity as a benefactor of our race.”

— The Honorable Thomas Millikin
On the occasion of the community presentation of Clark Lane’s portrait to the library, January 1892.
